Most VPN comparisons are written to sell you on NordVPN. This one isn't.
The honest answer is that Mullvad is the more credible privacy tool, but NordVPN is still the better fit for most developers. Both of those things are true at the same time, and understanding why helps you pick the right one.
What makes Mullvad different from every other VPN
Mullvad is a Swedish company that has built its entire product around one idea: that a VPN provider should know as little about you as possible, by design.
When you sign up, you don't enter an email address. You get a randomly generated account number, which is also your login. That's it. No name, no email, no phone number. Your account has no personal information attached to it because they never asked for any.
They accept cash sent in an envelope by post. They accept Monero and Bitcoin. Not as a PR move. They've done this since the beginning because their founders genuinely wanted a VPN that couldn't be linked back to you even if someone demanded the records.
In many locations, their servers are RAM-only. That means nothing is written to disk. Reboot the server and any session data disappears. They've had independent third-party audits of their no-logs claims, and the results have been good.
The feature set is simpler than NordVPN. You get a VPN, WireGuard and OpenVPN support, a kill switch, and multi-hop (routing through two servers). That's most of what you need. But there's no large server network, no built-in streaming optimization, and the apps are more basic.
What NordVPN does better
Speed is the main one. NordVPN has over 6,000 servers. Mullvad has around 700. More servers means better chances of finding a fast one near you, and NordVPN is consistently fast in independent tests.
The apps are also more polished. Setup is simple, the browser extensions work well, and the extra features are genuinely useful for developers. Meshnet lets you create a private network between your own devices, which is handy for accessing a home server remotely. Split tunneling lets you route specific apps through the VPN and leave others on your normal connection.
Dedicated IPs are available if you need a consistent IP address for whitelisting access to services. Double VPN routes your traffic through two servers if you want extra protection on a specific connection.
NordVPN has also committed to a no-logs policy and has had it audited. They're not lying about that.
Where NordVPN has some history worth knowing
In 2018, one of NordVPN's servers in Finland was accessed by an unauthorized party. NordVPN's position is that no user data was exposed because of their no-logs policy. That's probably true. But it happened.
NordVPN is also owned by Nord Security, a company that owns other products (Surfshark, for example). It's a legitimate business. But you're not dealing with a small independent company run by privacy advocates. You're dealing with a corporate structure.
None of this makes NordVPN unsafe. But for a developer whose concern is "I really don't want anyone to know I was using this VPN," Mullvad's setup is more airtight. There's no email address to subpoena, no account to connect to a real person.
Pricing
Mullvad is 5 euros per month, flat. No annual plan, no promotional pricing that doubles at renewal, no two-year deal. Month to month, forever. You can cancel any time with no friction.
NordVPN uses the typical VPN pricing model: expensive month-to-month ($12 to $13) but cheap if you commit to a two-year plan (often $3 to $4 per month with promotions). The catch is that the renewal price after the promotional period is higher.
Over two years, Mullvad at 5 euros/month comes to roughly $120. NordVPN's two-year promotional deal might be $80 to $100, but the renewal for another two years will cost more. The gap isn't as big as it looks.
Which one should you use?
For most developers: NordVPN. The speed advantage, the larger server network, the extra features like Meshnet and split tunneling, and the polished apps make it better for everyday use when privacy isn't your primary reason for using a VPN.
For developers who are handling sensitive client data, care about personal anonymity more than features, or want the most privacy-serious tool available: Mullvad. It's a small company that built a product around a clear principle, and the implementation matches the promise.
The practical question is what you're actually protecting against. If the answer is "I want to use public WiFi safely and keep my ISP from seeing my traffic," NordVPN is fine. If the answer involves client confidentiality, operating under surveillance concerns, or genuine anonymity requirements, Mullvad is worth the more limited feature set.
